An Unexpected Discovery

CHAPTER ONE

FOUNDATIONS

STORY TWO

REFLECTION

Sometimes the land has a story of its own. Before we could begin building our future, we were invited to uncover a piece of the past.

We thought the next chapter would begin with concrete and framing. Instead, it began with curiosity.

As the first layers of earth were carefully removed, the outline of an old foundation slowly emerged beneath the surface. What had once been someone's home had remained hidden for decades, quietly waiting beneath the lot we had chosen for Hudson House.

It was an unexpected reminder that every place carries a history long before we arrive. Before we could build something new, we first had to honor what had come before.

THE STORY

The discovery wasn't part of anyone's plan.

As excavation continued, Craig called to let us know that the crew had uncovered what appeared to be the original foundation of a home that once occupied the property. Hidden beneath years of soil, its footprint remained remarkably intact.

Construction paused just long enough to understand what had been found. Measurements were taken. Conversations followed. What initially looked like another obstacle quickly became something much more meaningful.

Standing at the site, we imagined the family who once walked these same grounds. Their home had disappeared from view, but traces of their lives had remained beneath the earth all along.

Eventually, the foundation would need to be removed so Hudson House could begin. But for a brief moment, two homes—one remembered and one still imagined—shared the same ground.

CLOSING REFLECTION

Before Hudson House could write its own story, it paused long enough to acknowledge the one that came before. Discovering the original foundation reminded us that Hudson House is not replacing history; it is becoming part of it. The land has already witnessed generations of dreams, celebrations, and everyday life. We are simply the next stewards of its story. Before our own foundation could be poured, we were given the opportunity to pause, look back, and acknowledge those who came before us. It was a gift we never expected, and one we won't soon forget.
